Introduction

Mainstreaming EqualitySports & Tourism Tanni Grey Thompson

The equality issues relevant to research and policy in sport have been considered by a number of organisations (see sportscotland and the Commission for Racial Equality). Sports related policy cuts across a broad number of areas, including, for example, health, education and social inclusion. Research and policy in this area can relate to participation in sport at all levels, access to viewing of sport, sport and regeneration, and representation in sport. Different sports bodies and organisations have been working with various groups to increase levels of participation and the quality of experience in sports. As a result, a number of initiatives are being progressed including a UK standard for equality in sport. In addition sports equity targets have been set for girls and women, disabled people and people from minority ethnic groups.
