Recent research by the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York found that a number of factors provide explanation for the low participation of young disabled people in sport. Although there is some lack of motivation or desire to participate only 10% of respondents reported motivational factors as a barrier to participation. External barriers such as a lack of money, health status and a lack of suitable local sports facilities all played a part in explaining low levels of participation.
