Disability
An in-depth survey conducted in 2003 by the Legal Studies Research Centre explored the prevalence and nature of civil problems experienced by disabled people in England and Wales. The research showed that 43% of disabled people had at least one civil legal problem at the time the survey was conducted. This is significantly greater than the overall problem incidence rate of 36%. Although more disabled people reported problems with discrimination, employment, neighbours, housing, homelessness, welfare benefits, domestic violence, personal injury, medical negligence, mental health and unfair treatment, they are no less likely to try and solve their problems that non-disabled people, and they tend to adopt similar advice-seeking strategies to the population as a whole.
