Pregnancy Discrimination at Work

Delivering an end to Pregnancy Discrimination at Work baby

The law provides protection for employed women who are pregnant or on maternity leave. Rules also apply to employers to help them plan ahead and manage maternity leave and pay.

On October 1, 2006, the Department of Trade & Industry - now the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (DBERR) - published a UK Pregnancy and Work leaflet on its website alongside revised guidance on the new maternity rights which came into effect that day to benefit women whose babies are due on or after April 1, 2007.

The leaflet can be downloaded as a pdf file from the DBERR website in two parts:

A hard copy of the leaflet has been available since January 2007. It is in two parts. The employee part is a standard A5 leaflet. The employer part is a concertina fold leaflet which is attached inside the back cover of the employee leaflet - so the employee can detach it and pass it to her employer.

Distribution

Copies were distributed throughout the UK in the Royal College of Midwives' publication Together We Care until the publication was discontinued at the end of December 2007 .

From October 2007, on the advice of Royal College of Midwives Scotland, copies were distributed in Scotland via the MAT B1 pack, which is given to all pregnant women in Scotland early in their pregnancy.

Distribution methods are currently being reviewed.

To order

Copies can be ordered by visiting the the DBERR website's Reports and Publications section and then typing 'Pregnancy and Work' in the free-text search.

The Scottish Government were involved in the drafting of the leaflet and has encouraged stakeholders to disseminate the information through their own newsletters and to provide electronic links to the online leaflet.

EOC Scotland launched the EOC's online toolkit for employers around pregnancy and maternity leave in March 2007 . The Scottish Government contributed funding of £2k to EOC Scotland to help raise awareness, especially amongst employers with a small to medium sized workforce, about the new maternity rights and the guidance/toolkit available to help them.
