Women's Multiple Discrimination

In their report, Improving the Position of Women in Scotland: An Agenda for Action, the Strategic Group on Women (SGW) identified that there was a need to look at the diverse experiences of women. The SGW recognised that women's needs are complex and that, depending on socio-economic background, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation and faith, there will be differing priorities and concerns.

The SGW identified what they felt were the key issues and action required to meet the needs of different groups of women living in Scotland:

  • Employment
  • Childcare
  • Caring
  • Poverty & Exclusion
  • Violence & Safety
  • Influence & Decision-making

They also recognised that there are other areas of concern not included in their report. Because of this, the SGW believed that further dialogue was needed with groups and individuals who could represent the diverse views and needs of women in Scotland.

Facts and Statistics

To date there has been very little research carried out at a Scottish level that gives a clear picture of different groups of women's experience. This is an issue that the Executive is very much aware of.

Here are some brief fact sheets collating some of the statistical information we currently have available:

Round Table Discussions

Recognising that women's needs are complex - depending on socio-economic background, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation and faith - the Executive asked the Scottish Women's Convention to hold three round table events:

  • Older Women - 13 October 2006 - Note
  • Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender Women - 20 October 2006 - Note
  • Women from Different Faith Communities - 26 October 2006 - Note

These events built on the round tables held in 2005 by the Executive, which explored those issues of concern for Disabled and Minority Ethnic women.

  • Women and Disability Roundtable - 20 October 2005 - Note
  • ME Women Roundtable - 7 December 2005 - Note

The views and experiences collected from these roundtables are helping to inform the work of the Scottish Women's Convention and also Scottish Government policy.
