Charities in Scotland

Charities in Scotland are regulated by the Scottish charity regulator, which is called OSCR (The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator). OSCR also awards charitable status in Scotland. There are currently just over 23,000 charities in Scotland, ranging from small local charities to large international charities.

OSCR is an independent body, and you can find out more information about it by visiting its website.

While OSCR is responsible for regulating individual charities, the Scottish Ministers are responsible for the legal framework that OSCR and charities must comply with. The Scottish Government's Charity Law Team leads this work and you can find out more about charity Law in Scotland.

How can I find out if a body is a charity registered in Scotland?

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator holds a list of all charities registered in Scotland and you can look on OSCR's website for individual charities.

How do I know that someone collecting for charity is legitimate?

You can ask the fundraiser for the name and charity number of the charity they are collecting for and, if you wish, ask to see written confirmation of this. If they are collecting cash in the street or at your door they should have the permission of the local authority and you can check that with the collector or your local authority. If you still have concerns think carefully before donating. You can always contact the charity directly to make a donation.

I have concerns about a charity, what should I do?

You should contact OSCR in the first instance.

How can I set up a charity?

You need to apply to OSCR. OSCR's website contains guidance on becoming a charity in Scotland.

I am a charity and I have a query, who should I contact?

If your query relates existing or forthcoming legislation or Government policy you should contact the Charity Law Team. All other queries should be directed to OSCR in the first instance.

I am a charity and would like to apply for Government funding, how do I do this?

You may be eligible to apply for one of the following funding streams available. More information can be viewed here.
