There are 16 prisons and young offenders institutions in Scotland.
The majority are for male adults. One establishment holds the majority of female prisoners, and another two cater for male young offenders.
Carries out regular inspections of Scotland's prisons.
The system allows prisoners to be released, on licence and under specific conditions, to serve part of their sentence under supervision in the community.
