VULNERABLE WITNESSES ACT IMPLEMENTATION STEERING GROUP

TRAINING AND COMMUNICATIONS SUB-GROUP

TAKING EVIDENCE ON COMMISSION/USE OF A SUPPORTER

1. The contract to produce draft guidance on taking evidence on commission has been let to Professors Ray Bull and Graham Davies of the University of Leicester.

2. The contract runs from 1 November and the work is due to be completed by 7 February 2005. Thereafter subject to this sub-group being content with the drafts there will be a short period of consultation before these pieces of guidance are finalised and published.

3. Professor Bull and Professor Davies are coming to Edinburgh on the afternoon of 26 November to meet Paul Smart and Bill Moore of the Victims and Witnesses Unit and Members are invited to attend as this will constitute the first meeting of the project steering group for this work.

4. Professors Bull and Davies are likely to contact key stakeholders to discuss the form and content of the guidance. Letters of introduction will have been issued to this effect by the Victims and Witnesses Unit by the time of this meeting of the sub-group. As you will know, this work is intended to complement the Rules of Court and associated Practice Note by providing general advice and guidance to a wide range of practitioners who will in one way or another be involved in the practical arrangements of providing these special measures.
