A Vision for the Future
In April 2002, the first comprehensive
policy document in over 50 years for the fire service in
Scotland, was launched by the Scottish Executive.
The Scottish Fire Service of the Future was a
consultation paper which built on the work of the Steering
Group which had been established in 1998 to undertake a
review of both the police and fire services in Scotland to
determine whether their structures remained the best way to
deliver their services to the community.
The paper also sought views on a range of
other issues aimed at improving the service and making the
best use of its resources.
The Scottish Fire Service of the Future is

The consultation period ended on 30 July
and generally, the responses were positive with a
considerable degree of consensus for the
recommendations.
