Sexual health

people in shopping centreSexual health in Scotland must be improved - not just for young people, but for people of all ages.

There are many influences on sexual health. These include the choices people make and the communities that they live in.

Only when people know the facts can they take responsible and informed decisions to protect against the dangers of sexually transmitted infections.

It is also a topic that some people feel uncomfortable talking about: to their peers, partners and children.

The purpose of this site is to provide key information about the programme of action to influence and encourage the nation to develop a culture of self respect, respect for others and strong relationships.

A new Scottish Government website to encourage Scots to be more open when talking about their sex lives was launched on 17 June 2008 to help cut unplanned pregnancies and sexual infections.

It gives advice on how best to communicate with a current or potential sexual partner, with advice such as not interrupting when they speak, concentrating on what they are saying and maintaining eye contact.

The website at http://www.sexualhealthscotland.co.uk/ has been launched ahead of a campaign starting in August 2009.

The aim is to get people to be more open about sex and to encourage them to discuss those more sensitive issues such as STIs pregnancy and ultimately whether they are ready or want to have sex.

The campaign will also go on to encourage wider use of long-lasting reversible contraception and also reducing HIV rates.
