Review of Community Eyecare Services

Eye

In March 2004, the Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care, Lewis Macdonald, announced a review of eyecare services in Scotland.

A group was established to review arrangements for the provision of eyecare services in the community in Scotland, and to provide recommendations on good practice for effective models of care.

The aim of the review is to encourage the development of integrated eyecare services to ensure patients receive a good quality and efficient service, in a convenient setting without undue wait. The Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care launched the interim report of the community eyecare review in October 2005. That report set out the range of topics covered by the review. Proposed changes in general ophthalmic services were described in some detail and an outline account was given of work in progress on services for visually impaired children, a review of the certification and registration system and a study of the interagency work in three localities in Scotland.

The final report brings together all of the elements of the review and recommendations are made to improve the quality and co-ordination of community eyecare services.
