Review of the National Physical Activity (PA) Strategy Let's make Scotland more Active (2003)
In December 2007 Mr John Beattie (Chair of original Physical Activity Task Force) met with Mr Stewart Maxwell Minister for Communities and Sport to discuss implementation of the National Physical Activity (PA) Strategy Let's make Scotland more Active (2003). John Beattie suggested that this would be an opportune time to review progress in implementing the national physical activity strategy, particularly as the strategy recommended that that there should be a review of the national targets in 5 years. The Minister agreed that a group comprising of representatives from Government, NHS Health Scotland, relevant academic experts and John should be convened to assess progress on how the Strategy has been implemented and its impact.
Aim of the review
To evaluate the implementation process towards the review, and to recommend priorities for action within the strategy in the next five years, maximising improvements in the nation's physical activity levels.
The review process
The review had two distinct phases.
Phase one was focused upon the collection of existing and new evidence from a range of sources, which was clearly guided by the recommendations made by the PA strategy and key PA indicators provided in the WHO monitoring and evaluation framework.
Phase two focused around engaging with the PA workforce, utilising existing networks such as PAHA, regional engagement events and identifying any changes in evidence/recommendations in order to inform the process of priority setting for the future.
The results of the review
The results of the review of Scotland's Physical Activity Strategy were launched by Shona Robinson Minister for Public health at the PAHA conference on 24 February 2009.
The review made key recommendations in the following areas for the Continuation of LMSMA.
- Environment
- Performance Management and Accountability
- Supporting Physical Activity projects and initiatives
- Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation
- Communications
- National Co-ordination
- Local Co-ordination and leadership
