Physical Education

There is evidence that the more activities a young person has experience of in childhood, the greater the chance of them continuing to be active as an adult.

'Improving Physical Education in Primary Schools' (2001) - a report by her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI) found that only one-third of schools in Scotland had very good programmes for physical education

The report identifies six main areas that needed to be improved to raise achievement in physical education.

These main areas are:

  • raise expectations of what can be achieved
  • develop programmes for physical education which increase the opportunities in the school programme and promote sport, organised classes and outdoor education opportunities outside school hours
  • improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching
  • make better use of assessment to provide pupils with feedback that will improve their performance and keep them motivated in physical education
  • provide clearer advice and better support for teachers to develop their confidence and skills in teaching physical education
  • improve the management of physical education
