Week two - taking the long way round

Friday, February 13, 2009

View from Regent RoadSurprisingly the snow has helped me walk more this week. The hill from St Andrews House to Parliament has been too icy so I've been walking the long way round. I've also had some very pleasant walks taking my daughter to school.

Next week there is a parliamentary recess so it should be a good opportunity to pick up the pace.

Considering the levels of obesity, CVD, diabetes, etc in Scotland I support any action which aims to encourage people to take more exercise. I am content that Shona is leading by example (which is more than can be said of most ministers!!) and hopefully it will help people realise that exercise doesn't necessarily involve lots of time or effort!

I have reached the age where I have realised that basic fitness needs a bit of effort from me. Before that, I regarded the outdoors as an inconvenient space between two buildings. It is easy to mock simple initiatives, but their impact on health can be considerable. Remember, the jogging movement of the 70, and 80s swept the globe, with major benefits to people and to the economic health of their communities. Get out there!

I am concerned that the current Ministers spend too much time working. Walking in the crip clear air would blow cobwebs away and lead to better productivity. Your contry needs - and for a long time to come. Pace yourself!

I think this blog is an excellent idea for showing how simple it can be to add regular exercise to your daily routine. As for the comment by Paula - get a life!
