Breakfast Clubs

Breakfast clubs exist in many schools and community venues throughout Scotland . They are set up for a variety of reasons, the main one being to ensure that children start the day with a healthy breakfast. ' Breakfast Clubs: A Head Start' (Scottish Community Diet Project 2001) is a step by step guide to the ups and downs of setting up and running a Breakfast club and includes Healthy Breakfast guidelines.

Breastfeeding

The Scottish Executive seeks to co-ordinate and stimulate support for breast feeding through the Scottish Breastfeeding Group and the appointment of a National Breastfeeding Adviser.

British Dietetic Association

The British Dietetic Association, established in 1936, is the professional association for dietitians. The association was established to advance the science and practice of dietetics and associated subjects, promote training and education in the science and practice of dietetics and associated subjects and regulate the relations between dietitians and their employer through the BDA Trade Union.

British Heart Foundation

The Britsh Heart Foundation is the largest independent funder of heart research in the UK. It plays an important role in funding education, reaching the public and health professionals.

CHARIS

CHARIS, provides an innovative and technical service for food and drink companies to develop new products and processes through improved knowledge and technology transfer from the academic and scientific sectors.

Children in Scotland

Children in Scotland is the national agency for voluntary, statutory and professional organisations and individuals working with children and their families in Scotland.

Communities Scotland

Communities Scotland is an Executive agency. It's aim is to work with others to develop strong communities across Scotland.

CoSLA

COSLA, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, is the representative voice of Scottish local government and also acts as the employers' association on behalf of all Scottish councils.

DEFRA

The UK food and drink manufacturing and retailing industries contain many world leaders, but the need to secure competitive improvement has never been more important. Defra as sponsor department for these industries continues to work closely with individual sectors and key businesses to foster and promote greater competitiveness and to remove obstacles to growth.

The aim of the Department of Health (DH) is to improve the health and wellbeing of people in England.

EAT WELL

Eatwell which is affiliated to the Food Standards Agency provides consumer information on healthier choices.

Edinburgh Community Food Initiative

The Edinburgh Community Food Initiative (ECFI) supports food initiatives and co-ops throughout Edinburgh. The ECFI also works with local people to identify and tackle issues around food poverty.

Edinburgh Cyrenians

Edinburgh Cyrenians work with hundreds of people each year who face the trauma of homelessness in and around Scotland's capital city. It runs a Good Food in Tackling Homelessness intiative which combats the problem of poor diet in this sector.

Fas Fallain

Fas Fallain assists individuals and communities in the growing of their own food for home consumption with surpluses generating an income through their sale in rural shops and a network of local produce outdoor markets.

Food Standards Agency Scotland

Food Standards Agency Scotland was launched on April 3 2000. It is commited to improving food safety and standards in Scotland and to protect the health of Scotland's population in relation to food.

Forth Valley Food Links

This local food initiative based in Stirling but working throughout Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling Council areas works with food producers interested in supplying Forth Valley communities and outlets with locally-grown fresh produce and a community-based organisation keen to set up your own food growing or food access project.

Gorbals Healthy Living Network

Gorbals Healthy Living Network work with existing partners to develop opportunities to access healthier food choices within the Gorbals.

HealthyLiving Website

For practical advice on healthy eating, visit the healthyliving website. This website is jointly run by the Scottish Execuitve and NHS Health Scotland.

Healthy Living Award

The Scottish Consumer Council and Scottish Executive have been working to develop an exiting new Healthy Living Award for the catering and food service sector in Scotland, to make it easier for people eating out to know where to go for healthier food.

Healthy Start

The Welfare Food Scheme is being replaced by a new Scheme called Healthy Start. Healthy Start will provide vouchers that can be exchanged for fresh fruit and vegetables as well as milk and infant formula. It will also ensure that pregnant women and families participating in the Scheme have the opportunity to access good quality information and advice about healthy family diet and about infant feeding as well as broader health issues.

HMIE

HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) in Scotland became an Executive Agency in April 2001. This was in response to it's changing role and function brought about by devolution and by an increasing emphasis placed on an independent, rigorous evaluation of the Scottish education system.

Hungry for Success

The Executive has invested £63.5m over three years in a revitalised school meals service in Scotland. Nutritional standards have been developed for school meals and these will be enforced and monitored by performance management systems for schools.

NHS Health Scotland

Health Scotland is a new special health board created in April 2003 by bringing together the Public Health Institute of Scotland (PHIS), and the Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS). It provides a national focus for improving health and works with the Scottish Executive and other key partners to take action to improve health and reduce inequalities in Scotland.

Royal Highland and Agricultural Society

The Society was founded in 1784 to promote the regeneration of rural Scotland. The industries of rural Scotland are major contributors to the economy and character of our country. The land-based and allied industries are a major part of that rural economy. They produce much of our food and drink, manage and conserve our countryside and provide access for sport and recreation to millions.

Scientific Advisory Commitee on Nutrition

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) is an advisory Committee of independent experts that provides advice to the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health as well as other Government Agencies and Departments. Its remit includes matters concerning nutrient content of individual foods, advice on diet and the nutritional status of people.

Scotland's Health at Work

Scotland's Health at Work is a national award programme (Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards) which rewards employers who demonstrate commitment to improving the health and ultimately the performance of their workforce.

Scotland's Health on the Web (SHOW)

The SHOW service is provided by a team of people based within the Information and Statistics Division of NHSScotland. In addition to the SHOW team, the contributing websites on SHOW are provided by the organisations themselves and a dedicated army of NHSScotland staff. SHOW is supported and funded by the Scottish Executive Health Department.

Scottish Community Diet Project

The Scottish Community Diet Project's over-riding aim is to help improve Scotland's diet and health. It does this by supporting work within low-income communities which improves access to and take-up of a healthy diet. It also supports both community initiatives and inter-agency partnership working.

Scottish Consumer Council

The Scottish Consumer Council's (SCC) purpose is to make all consumers matter. We are an independent policy organisation with a solid foundation in consumer research. We have a special focus on the needs of disadvantaged consumers. Over the years, we have been able to bring about real benefits for consumers, across the broad range of issues, which affect people's lives including: health, education, justice, local government and food.

Scottish Food and Drink Federation

The Scottish Food and Drink Federation (SFDF) represents and promotes the common interests of the food and drink manufacturing industry - primarily to the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Parliament and the Food Standards Agency Scotland. The SFDF ensures that the food and drink manufacturing industry's voice is heard where it matters.

Scottish Food and Drink (Scottish Enterprise)

Scottish Food & Drink is an industry-led strategy which is supported by Scottish Executive and facilitated by Scottish Enterprise, with many other public and private sector organisations helping industry to deliver. It is led by an Industry Strategy Group with membership from key industry players. At a practical level, Scottish Food & Drink helps individual businesses and industry groups grow and take advantage of UK and international market opportunities.

Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards

The Scottish Executive's Healthy Living Campaign is a major sponsor of the Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards which are now in their fifth year The awards are organised jointly and co-sponsored by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and Scottish Food and Drink in association with Scottish Enterprise.

Scottish Grocers Federation

The Scottish Grocer's Federation aims to maintain a central body - representative of all retail grocers and convenience stores in Scotland, to promote the interests of the retail food trade in Scotland and to obtain redress of trade grievances, to confer with and advise local or national authorities on all matters affecting the trade, to co-operate with other trade associations and sectors of the trade on all matters of common interest and to maintain the status of the trade.

Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit

The Unit works principally in a strategic way, influencing policy and guidance towards ensuring that health promoting school development is integral to local and national policy and plans. In order to do this, the Unit works closely with key partners including The Scottish Executive Health and Education Departments, Learning and Teaching Scotland, NHS Health Scotland, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and HM Inspectorate of Education.

Scottish Nutrition and Diet Resources Initiative

The Scottish Nutrition and Diet Resources Initiative (SNDRí) aims to produce a range of easily accessible resources on nutrition and diet, which give consistent health messages to the public, and avoid duplication of effort by professionals in Scotland.

Scottish Retail Consortium

The Scottish Retail Consortium was established to represent the interests of the sector to the Scottish Parliament on the main issues affecting Scottish retailers.

SEERAD Agriculture Policy

The Scottish Executive Environmental and Rural Affairs Department provides information on agricultural and food policy, and their operation within the context of the rural environment

Smart Cooking

'More Smart Cooking' has been developed by Learning and Teaching Scotland with support from the Scottish Executive Health Department as part of a wider approach to promote and support healthy eating in Scotland.

Soil Association

The Soil Association is the UK's leading campaigning and certification organisation for organic food and farming.

Sustain

Sustain is the alliance for better food and farming. It advocates food and agriculture policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, enrich society and culture and promote equity.

Voluntary Health Scotland

Voluntary Health Scotland have developed strategic partnerships with health services in Scotland so that community based organisations can maximise their contribution to health improvement and health care.

World Health Organisation

The World Health Organisation which was established in 1948 is the United Nations specialised agency for Health. Its objective is to attainment for all people to gain the highest possible level of health.
