Physical Impairment

In January 2002, the Deputy Minister for Health and Community care agreed to the Parliament's Health and Community Care committee that work would be undertaken to improve knowledge and understanding of the needs of younger people with physical disabilities and/or early onset dementia and the range and quality of care services that are provided for them, with a view to informing future policy decisions in this area.

The Scottish Executive commissioned a scoping review on the needs of younger people with physical disabilities and/or early onset dementia, and the range and quality of care services provided for them in order to identify key emerging themes and any gaps in current services.

There are a number of community care issues which may directly affect the lives of younger people with physical disabilities and/or early onset dementia, such as direct payments, the Joint Future Agenda and the National Care Standards. It is hoped that future development of these areas will be informed by the scoping review.
