In June 2008, a six week public consultation on the national uniform proposals was launched and 647 responses were received. These included responses from organisations such as professional bodies, unions and NHS Boards.
Summary of findings:
- There is strong agreement that there is a need for the greater simplicity and consistency that a national uniform would provide. (88% of respondents who answered the question responded positively).
- Most of the organisations who commented on the tunic style were positive and considered the general style to be appropriate; however individuals respondees were more mixed, with only half considering it suitable. Concerns were raised about the pull-over style, re contamination with bodily fluids.
- The most important factors when selecting fabric were considered to be comfort (especially in relation to temperature and wearer movement/fit), durability and ease of laundering, (able to withstand commercial laundering process). Most respondents were extremely positive about the silver technology material, in particular, welcoming the option of a thermodynamic fabric. Few respondents suggested alternative fabrics, though cotton was mentioned most frequently by those who did.
- The most important factors when specifying NHS trousers were considered to be comfort (especially in relation to temperature and wearer movement/fit), durability and fit.
