Health Care Support Workers play key roles in providing services for patients. They include porters and domestics, as well as care and therapy assistants.
From 2010 new support workers joining the NHS will be required to meet public protection standards within a new induction programme and to comply with a code of conduct.
Their employers will also have to comply with a new code of practice.
The standards and codes have been developed after wide consultation with stakeholders, including the public, and were tested in a pilot project across Scotland.
