Aims of the Review

The review:

  • records what nurses do well in providing modern care for the people of Scotland
  • makes recommendations for the future delivery of nursing services in the community.
The review covered ALL nursing in the community. That means:

District Nurses, Health Visitors, School Nurses, Practice Nurses, Mental Health Nurses, Learning Disability Nurses, Children's Nurses, Public Health Nurses, and others like nurses delivering cancer services in the community.

What did the review aim to achieve?

The review was basically about trying to find out what community nurses, in partnership with fellow professionals, should be doing to give patients the best possible care in or near their own homes.

It also looked at:
  • how community nurses are organised
  • what services they should be delivering
  • what they do that really helps patients.
The review will lead to a modern, re-designed community nursing service that:
  • helps to keep patients at home rather than being admitted to hospital
  • helps to get patients discharged from hospital quicker
  • helps people with long-term conditions like diabetes and asthma
  • helps people stay well, and get better quicker if they become ill.
