The final report will be available at the end of July 2006. Consensus Conference 16th May
The purpose of the conference was to share and discuss with delegates: the findings of the review, the main elements of the final report and possible mechanisms for implementing recommendations, to give delegates the opportunity to contribute to the draft that will be out for further comments in early June.
It was held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh with a range of participants. Jonathan Pryce, Head of Primary Care, Scottish Executive chaired the afternoon and Jane Walker, Nursing Officer at the Scottish Executive summarised the Review process. Catherine Paterson, a carer, eloquently described her experience of caring for her husband and challenged the group to listen to carers, not to treat them like fools; to work with them rather than against them and not to take the attitude that professionals always know best, because that is not always the case! She urged practitioners and organisations to work together and reminded the group to be patient of the demands carers make.
Helen Morrison outlined the proposed future model of care for nurses in the community which can be found on
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Health/care/communitynursing/proposedfuturemodel before participants divided into workshops to explore four key questions
· Will this model work in your area?
· Is there an alternative solution?
· Are there inherent risks in this model that would need to be addressed?
· What support would be needed to implement the model for practitioners, NHS Boards and HEIs?
