Information & Intelligence Meeting - 7th September 2004

Attendees:

Lynn Anderson, Shazia Ashraf, Andy Carter, David Knowles, Joan Jamieson, Jenny Bodie, Dr Mary-Anne Lumsden

Main Points raised in meeting:

  • A clear picture of the current workforce in Scotland is needed however there is still a great deal of uncertainty of how the data will be captured, stored and then used.

  • How to overcome the problem of staff/patients not providing data regarding ethnicity, sexuality etc. An explanation is required as to why this information is needed therefore enabling staff/patients to feel comfortable in providing their personal details.

  • Everyone in recruitment should have equal opportunities training - possibly be made mandatory? Current picture of training and recruitment has to be developed.

  • Further information is needed on the number of international medical students studying and in training and the number of doctors that are returning home.

  • It was mentioned that the SWISS project does not show much on training.

  • Further information is required about the progress of the SWISS project - what is the timeline? What information is not easily accessible? What further information can be added to the core data set?

  • GP's, Opticians, Pharmacists, Dentists - Are these professionals and their staff included in the SWISS project?

  • SWISS and WoNuG are currently working on data collection however social class data has not been targeted. Questions were raised as how to measure social class?
