Spiritual Care, Religion and Chaplaincy

The Healthcare Chaplaincy Training and Development Unit was established in 2001 both to develop more adequate training for chaplains and to be a resource for health boards who had been asked to write and implement new Spiritual Care policies.

The initiative came from guidance originally produced by a multi faith steering group and which, following extensive consultation, was turned into a Health Department Letter "HDL (2002) 76 Spiritual care in NHS Scotland".

The HCTD Unit has an educational, resource and supportive role in the development of Departments of Spiritual and Religious Care and in the writing and implementation of the Spiritual Care Policy of each health board. A multi faith Spiritual Care Development Committee has been established to enable discussion between faith communities, interested groups, health boards and the SEHD.
