EUROPEAN YEAR OF EQUALITY

The European Commission has named 2007 as the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.

The 2007 European year will focus on discrimination linked to gender, ethnicity, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation and will centre around the four themes of:

1. Rights - Raising awareness on the right to equality and non-discrimination and on the problem of multiple discrimination
2. Representation - Stimulating debate on ways to increase the participation of groups in society which are victims of discrimination and a balanced participation of men and women
3. Recognition - facilitating and celebrating diversity and equality
4. Respect - Promoting a more cohesive society

The initiative will give energy to the anti-discrimination campaign and promote equal opportunities for all, while communicating a positive message about diversity. Hundreds of different activities will be staged across the European Union throughout the year.
