Tribunals

Tribunals:

  • are established by statute.
  • are responsible for tasks and advice relating to specialist areas of the law.
  • independently of the Scottish Government, decide the rights and obligations of private citizens towards each other or Government Departments or other public authorities.
  • carry out judicial functions but are separate from the formal court system.
  • have both specialist and lay members.
  • do not employ staff.
  • are not responsible for budgets or expenditure other than remuneration (where paid) and expenses for tribunal members.
