Development of Strategy

One Scotland - One Geography was launched at the Annual Convention of the Highlands and Islands on the 7th November 2005. Launching One Scotland - One Geography George Lyon, Deputy Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform, stated,
"Information linking people with places is fundamentally important to the daily lives of every person and organisation in Scotland and underpins most of the daily transactions of Scottish society. Such geographic information will help improve electronic service delivery and, by providing new insights on Scotland and its people, provide better information to everyone. One Scotland - One Geography commits the Scottish Executive to work closely with a wide range of partners from public, private and academic sectors to make this information more widely available, particularly in the more remote areas of Scotland".

This Strategy has been produced in a wider UK, European and global context. The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act and the modernising government agenda encourage more efficient use, and proactive release, of information. Whilst the European initiative, Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE), has encouraged many countries throughout Europe, including Northern Ireland and Wales, to develop strategies that underpin more systematic and effective use of geographic information.
A wide range of external stakeholders provided invaluable comments during the consultation period of the strategy. Follow this link to view the Consultation Report. Consultation Responses are also available to download.
Currently the implementation phase of the strategy is being devised.
