
Xinjiang, meaning "New Frontier", is one of five autonomous regions in China. It is China's largest province accounting for more than one-sixth of the country's total territory and a quarter of its external borders. There are a dozen minority groups in the province which together account for 60% of its population, with the Uighurs, Muslims of Turkish origin, making up 47%.
