Tianjin, one of China's four province-level municipalities, is located in the northeast of China, bounded by the Bohai Sea in the east and Mount Yanshan in the north. Tianjin, is one of the largest industrial port cities in China. In recent years Tianjin has undergone rapid development: per capita GDP is the 3rd highest in the country after Shanghai and Beijing.

The University of Edinburgh have links in the fields of science, maths, and engineering with Nankai University in Tianjin. This includes an annual Edinburgh/Nankai mathematics seminar.
