Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group in 'Nei Menggu', followed by the Mongols. The Han Chinese arrived during the 19th and 20th centuries in successive waves of migration and live mainly along the Yellow River as well as various population centres in central and eastern Inner Mongolia. The Mongols, who now comprise less than one fifth of the population have given up their nomadic lifestyle as their pastoral economy was collectivised during the Maoist Era.
