Hunan is located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and south of Lake Dongting (the name Hunan means "south of the lake"). It is the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong and for that reason has attracted many tourists over the years.

Glasgow Caledonian University have a memorandum of agreement for advanced entry to computing or business courses with Jishou University in Hunan.
