Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is situated to the west of Guangdong on the Beibu Gulf. As the only western province with a coastline, Guangxi has an important role in the Western Region Development Programme, acting as a major gateway for imports to and exports from the region. However Guangxi is better known for its beautiful landscapes and colourful ethnic culture and is one of China's most popular tourist spots. The "Lijiang Scenes" in Guilin and numerous underground grottoes are among the province's most famous attractions.
