With a population of 31 million (2003), Chongqing is the largest and most populous of China's four province-level municipalities, and the only one in the less densely populated western half of China. Located at the head of the reservoir behind the Three Gorges Dam, Chongqing is planned to be the beachhead for the development of western China.

There is a British Consulate-General and British Council office in Chongqing.

In July 2000 the Mayor of Chonqing, Mr Bao Xu Ding, visited Scotland.

In December 2000 the Director General of Chongqing, Mr Jia Qin Ying, visited Scotland.

Commercial Links

The China-Britain Business Council have an office in Chongqing.

Scottish & Newcastle have a joint venture in Chongqing.
