Gleneagles - today owned by Diageo PLC -
was described as the 'Highland Riviera' when it opened in
1924. It was built by the Caledonian Railway Company
complete with its own railway station to bring guests into
the heart of the Perthshire countryside.
The hotel quickly
became the height of fashion and a rural playground for the
wealthy with golf and grouse shooting as its principal
attractions but in tune with society's seasons, it only
opened during the summer months for the first four decades
of its existence.
Then, in 1982, a multi-million pound renovation was
begun to restore the elegance and style of its original
character.
Since the 1980s
Gleneagles has won more than 40 awards
from the travel, catering and associated industries. In
1986 it was awarded the Automobile Association's supreme
accolade of Five Red Stars, which it has retained every
year.
In 1993, the PGA Centenary Course, designed by Jack
Nicklaus, opened to complement the renowned King's and
Queen's courses and confirm the resort as one of the
world's finest golfing venues.
