Background

The Scottish Fisheries Council is a partnership between the Scottish Government and stakeholders with an interest in commercial sea fishing. It represents one of the most comprehensive fish industry/stakeholder liaison groups in Europe, underlying the importance of sea fishing to Scotland. The SFC replaces and builds on the SeaFAR process initiated by the previous administration and is establishing measures to achieve outcomes under the themes of

  • Sustainable Seas
  • Profitable Industries
  • A Successful and Reputable Product and Vibrant Confident Fishing Industry
  • Communities for Scotland's future fishing

Richard LochheadThe SFC provides a means by which the Scottish Government can implement policies in partnership with stakeholders and is chaired by Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment. Its membership covers all sectors to the fishing industry including fisheries, processors, retailers, community representatives, fisheries scientists, policy makers, environmentall groups, enforcement and industry bodies.

There are a number of subgroups which will be able to develop their own measures where these are aligned with the framework and desired outcomes provided by the main (SFC) Council. Subgroups will be asked to update the main Council regularly on progress and report in detail on activities annually.
