SFFF SG 6-4 a: Steering Group Comments on Annual/ Weekly close times

Salmon:-

Sundays

No change

  1. If salmon angling on a Sunday were permitted we would probably have to have two other days off instead (in the interests of conservation).
  2. Current arrangement leaves open the possibility of allowing greater access for angling for other species.

Consultative Committee on Protection Orders

No change - Scottish Anglers National Association

Seasons

No change - Current powers seem adequate.

Season

Could possibly consider making it possible to run close season from 1 Sept till 31 March, in appropriate locations.

Grayling:-

Season

'Be guided by representations form Grayling Society'.

Consultative Committee on Protection Orders

'Do not oppose the suggestion made by the Grayling Society, if this is what the grayling Society wants, although the SFCA consider that it would be totally unenforceable because of the overlap with brown trout in terms of habitats and angling methods'. Scottish Federation for Coarse Angling

'We completely support the wishes of the Grayling Society for the Closed Season of 15th March until 15th June' Scottish Anglers National Association

Coarse Fish:-

- 'Be guided by representations from Coarse Angling bodies'.

Consultative Committee on Protection Orders

'We would support whatever the coarse anglers would like' Scottish Anglers National Association

'We oppose the insertion of such a provision with regard to coarse species. We do not consider such a thing to be necessary, and are concerned that it could be abused or imposed misguidedly. It is far too blunt an instrument to deal with the problems that it would purport to address. As previously stated, there should be a power on the part of management bodies to identify, based on sound scientific information, refuge areas or sensitive sites where fishing may have to be restricted for some parts of the year. That could best be provided within the scope of the "son of Protection Order" rather than by the imposition of statutory close seasons'. Scottish Federation for Coarse Angling
