Scotland's freshwater fish populations and communities are of international natural heritage value. Despite declines in catches in recent years, Scotland's salmon fishery remains of international importance. Catches of sea trout have also declined, particularly in the west and north west of the country. Nevertheless, these important fisheries still attract many anglers. In addition, many thousands of anglers fish for brown trout throughout Scotland. Put-and-take fisheries, particularly for Rainbow trout, have been established in many places and new fisheries continue to be developed. The demand for coarse fishing is also increasing.
