The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a global UN treaty to protect human health and the environment from POPs.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is a sub-organisation of the UN. It is responsible for various conventions relating to Europe, including the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution.
Since its entry into force in 1983, the Convention has been extended by eight protocols. These include:
The 1999 Stockholm Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone
The 1998 Aarhus Protocol on Persistent Organic Pollutants
The 1998 Protocol on Heavy Metals
The 1994 Protocol on Further Reduction of Sulphur Emissions
The 1991 Protocol concerning the Control of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds or their Transboundary Fluxes
