Bathing water safety

Although the Scottish Government is only responsible for water quality, it recognises the importance for bathers to have the opportunity of safe bathing, and to be aware of potential risks to their safety.

Maritime and Coastguard Agency

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency are the UK Government body responsible for search and rescue at sea. Every summer they launch their national Sea Smart campaign. This urges beachgoers to remember basic safety advice to avoid accidents and who to call in an emergency. They advise calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard if you see anyone in difficulty at the coast where lifeguards aren't present.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution

The RNLI is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around Scotland as well as the rest of the UK and Republic of Ireland. As well as providing a lifeboat fleet and lifeguard service, the RNLI is also actively involved in promoting beach and water safety by changing attitudes and behaviour among people through better education and raising safety awareness.
