Shellfish Waters
The quality of Scottish shellfish is renowned worldwide and the industry provides valuable jobs in some of Scotland's remotest areas. However, to maintain its success, the industry requires clean and healthy water to ensure that its products, which are destined for human consumption, are of the highest quality.
In line with the Shellfish Waters Directive (2006/113/EC) , and to support this vital industry, the Scottish Government has designated waters used for commercial shellfish cultivation as requiring protection or improvement.
Water quality in designated areas is regularly monitored by SEPA.
