Summary of Findings

The National Stakeholder Forum includes senior representatives from industry, environmental groups, and farming and community interests has been formed to oversee the introduction of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Scotland.

Environment Minister Ross Finnie made the announcement in Edinburgh on 28 March 2003, at a WFD conference jointly organised by the Executive and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

The Forum will provide advice to Scottish Ministers on any aspect of WFD implementation in Scotland and present information to key stakeholders on the introduction of the WFD.

The Minister said:

"We are committed to working for a cleaner and safer environment, and the introduction of the Water Framework Directive will play a major role in this.

"During the process of introducing the Water Environment And Water Services Act, we developed positive and productive relationships with a range of stakeholders. The continued involvement of these key stakeholders will be essential to the effective implementation of the Water Framework Directive and this forum will deliver that co-operation and consensus.

"The WFD requires us to protect, enhance, and restore all bodies of surface water and groundwater in Scotland. The ultimate aim of this is to achieve good status for all our waters by 2015. This is no small task, but the steps we are taking today will play a major role in reaching these targets."
