The work of Phase II of the SSMEI project began by building upon and refining the findings of Phase I. The first component of the study focused on the crucial step between the initial synthesis, review, analysis and experiences of the Phase I project and the obligations and subsequent pilot projects that are now testing future initiatives for their sustainable development and management of the marine environment. Primary research was not conducted during this review.
A key factor in promoting sustainable development is improving communication and exchange of information between relevant sectors. Therefore, consultation played a key role in the Phase II project, feeding in at all levels. The comprehensive review of existing data prepared during Phase II is now being used to underpin the individual pilot management schemes of Phase III.
