The list below includes some of the government departments, devolved administrations, public bodies and non-governmental organisations involved in a range of issues relating to the aquatic environment.

Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) an Agency of DEFRA dealing with aquatic environment issues.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is the Government body leading and co-ordinating the UK response on international environmental issues. It is responsible for all aspects of water policy in England & Wales, including water supply and resources, and the regulatory systems for the water environment and the water industry. To achieve this, it works closely with the Environment Agency, which manages water resources and enforces water quality standards.

Environment and Heritage Services Northern Ireland (EHS) is an Agency within the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland and takes the lead in advising on, and in implementing, the Government's environmental policy and strategy in Northern Ireland.

Fisheries Research Services (FRS) is an Agency within the Scottish Government providing research and advice on a range of marine issues.

National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) promotes and protects the interests of the Scottish farming industry.

Scottish Environment Link is the liaison body for Scotland's main voluntary organisations with an interest in Scotland's environment.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is the public body responsible for environmental protection and improvement in Scotland.

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is the public body responsible for advising on matters which affect the natural heritage of Scotland, including the water environment.

Scottish Water (SW) provide public water and waste water services to household and business customers across Scotland.

Scottish and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER) assist a number of agencies and stakeholders in undertaking environmental research.
