Carnwath in Bloom were extremely grateful to recieve a Community Environmental Renewal Grant of £4570. This funding enabled them to purchase wheelbarrows, garden tools and a secure store in which to keep them. Materials to construct a compost bin, a self watering system, polytunnel staging and protective clothing for volunteers were also procured.
The group had installed approximately 150 flower-filled barrels and 84 hanging baskets around Carnwath - affected by quarry traffic through the town - and participated in planting and regeneration of greenspace around the village, where the tools purchased were utilised.
The group owned a polytunnel situated near the store in which it intended to propagate seedlings and plants. Like many similar groups, the work that may be carried out is limited by volunteer resources and so the self-watering system fitted to the polytunnel reduces workload of the volunteers and allows members to concentrate their efforts on maintaining the existing planters and baskets.
The compost bins when filled would allow the group a degree of self-sufficiency by providing raw material for future planting. As the planting progresses, it is the group's intention to invite local children, the Women's Guild, the over-60s club and the youth group to participate in the planting.
