Welcome to the Scottish Executive's Light Pollution Web Pages
Artificial light is essential in our society and helps to promote security, reduce road accidents, permit outdoor working and sport at night and advertise commercial enterprises. However, poorly designed, excessive and badly aimed lighting can have an adverse environmental effect and cause problems for people in the local neighbourhood.
One of the commitments in the Partnership Agreement is to reduce light pollution and save energy by specifying appropriate lighting standards. The Scottish Executive intends to develop and publish guidance on public lighting which will meet these aims.
The National Society for Clean Air have produced a leaflet on light pollution which gives further information on the issue. It explains the steps that can be taken to reduce light pollution and describes what you can do if faced with the problem of pollution from light.
