O BBC Weather Centre - Climate Change
BBC site featuring information on the evidence and impacts of climate change, the need to adapt to it and the policies aimed at addressing it. Also contains a links page and chat room.

O British Antarctic Survey
Website of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), which is an institute of the Natural Environment Research Council, that has, for the last fifty years, undertaken the majority of Britain's scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent, including measuring the impact of climate change on the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet and sea level rise.

O Business and Climate Change: Climate Change Projects Office
UK Government advisory office set up to assist UK businesses who wish to pursue opportunities arising from the Kyoto Protocol. Advice and support are provided for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and which could be eligible for tradeable emissions reduction credits.

O Carbon Trust
The Carbon Trust is an independent company funded by Government. Its role is to help the UK move to a low carbon economy by helping business and the public sector reduce carbon emissions now and capture the commercial opportunities of low carbon technologies.
O Choose Another Way
The Scottish Executive has produced this site to look at alternative ways of travelling besides the car. There are many options avaliable to us: bus, train and bicylce. The site provides a link to the traveline public transport information service, which gives information on the many travel options on offer.

O Climate Change in Scotland - Website for Scottish Schoolchildren
Climate Change website produced on behalf of the Scottish Executive by Learning and Teaching Scotland and aimed at young people aged between 9 and 14 (C/D/E of the Scottish curriculum). Contains resource materials and games designed to raise awareness of the key issues surrounding climate change and its effect on Scotland in a fun and understandable way.
O Climate prediction.net 
Climate prediction.net is an experiment being run by a team of experts from the UK, which aims to utilise personal computers across the world to help scientists quantify the uncertainty encountered in climate models and generate the world's most comprehensive probability-based forecast of twenty-first-century climate. It officially launched on 12 September 2003 at the Science Museum in London and at the British Association Festival of Science in Salford.

O Climatic Research Unit (CRU), University of East Anglia
Based in Norwich, the CRU is a leading institution concerned with the study of natural and anthropogenic climate change. The site contains details of the Unit's datasets, research, publications, and its academic programmes.

O Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
DEFRA's website contains a section devoted to climate change, providing background information on the science and politics of the subject. Information can also be found on what is being done to tackle the effects of climate change and on how industry, businesses and individuals can do their bit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

O DEFRA : Interactive Schools Site
Designed for schoolchildren in England, this site contains information on the causes and effects of climate change and what we can all do to help. There are two separate sections, one aimed at younger children (aged 7 to 12) and another aimed at older children (aged 12 to 16), with each containing activities appropriate to the age group.

O Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Energy Site
This DTI Energy Group website contains a section on renewable energy, providing general background information and details of the work of the Sustainable Energy Unit. Also see the website of the Sustainable Energy Policy Network, the body responsible for delivering the Energy White Paper directly or indirectly through having the links to business and other organisations nationally and regionally. A DTI website on the proposal of the European Parliament and of the Council on certain fluorinated greenhouse gases was launched on February 19 2004. The website of the Scottish Executive's environmental awareness campaign provides lots of tips on how we can all make small changes to our daily routine to make a big difference for the environment. Includes tips for doing a little in your home, garden, transport, neighbourhood, school and workplace.

O Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment
Written by the Atmosphere, Climate and Environment Information Programme, and supported by DEFRA, this encyclopedia is a one stop source of information on a range of atmospheric issues including air quality, acid rain, climate change and ozone depletion.

O Energy Saving Trust (EST)
EST was established as part of the UK Government's response to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and leads the field in delivering energy efficiency to domestic, business, local government and trade sectors.

O European Commission: Environment Directorate-General
The Environment DG is one of 36 Directorates-General (DGs) and specialised services which make up the European Commission. Its main role is to initiate and define new environmental legislation and to ensure that measures, which have been agreed, are actually put into practice in the Member States.

O European Environment Agency (EEA)
The EEA aims to support sustainable development and to help achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe's environment through the provision of timely, targeted, relevant and reliable information to policy making agents and the public. Climate change is one of the EEA's central themes.

O Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research
The Hadley Centre is part of the Met Office and provides a focus in the UK for the scientific issues associated with climate change. It develops state-of-the-art climate models using two supercomputers to improve understanding of the climate system and predict changes over the coming century.

O Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Set up in 1988 by the World Meteological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the role of IPCC is to assess scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation.

O International Energy Agency (IEA)
IEA is an international collaboration of governments and industry, with 26 member countries. Established in 1974 to implement an international energy programme, it began a Greenhouse Gas Research and Development Programme in 1991 to consider methods of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from fossil fuels. The site contains information on practical research and links to numerous technical papers.

O MarClim: Marine Biodiversity and Climate Change
MarClim is a multi-partner British and Irish project which aims to assess and forecast the influence of climate change on marine biodiversity in Britain and Ireland.

O Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
The NERC is one of the seven UK Research Councils, and provides independent research and training in the environmental sciences, including atmospheric science.

O Open University - Energy and Environment Research Unit
Set up in 1986, this academic unit co-ordinates research on sustainable energy technology and supports the development of environmentally sound approaches to the generation and use of energy.

O Scotland's Footprint

O Scotland & Nothern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER)

SNIFFER was formed in 1994 to promote and disseminate environmental research on behalf of members (the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Forestry Commission and the Environment and Heritage Service) and stakeholders. Research projects are focused particularly towards the themes of air, land, water and waste.

O Scottish Energy Efficiency Office (SEEO)
Part of the Scottish Executive, the SEEO serves domestic and business energy users to help them save money and contribute to helping the environment. It provides practical help on energy and waste management issues and can help you access loans and grants.

O Sustainable Scotland
The Executive's site about sustainable development in Scotland, containing information on what the Scottish Executive and others are doing to implement it.

O Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
The Tyndall Centre is a national centre for trans-disciplinary research on climate change that was launched in 2000. It brings together scientists, economists, engineers and social scientists, to develop sustainable responses to climate change on both a national and international level - not just within the research community, but also with business leaders, policy advisors, the media and the public in general.

O United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Established in 1972, UNEP is the environmental wing of the United Nations. This site contains a climate change portal which provides background information on climate change, details recent announcements and major initiatives, and other resources such as policy and strategy documents.

O United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
The UNFCCC was established at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Its website provides detailed information on the Kyoto Protocol and the annual climate change conferences, the Conference of the Parties. It also contains, among other things, a greenhouse gas emissions database.
O The UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP)
Set up by the UK Government in 1997, UKCIP is funded by DEFRA and based at the University of Oxford. Its remit is to help organisations assess how they might be affected by climate change so that they can prepare for its impacts. UKCIP's latest scenarios report (UKCIP02), which offer four alternative scenarios of how climate change may affect UK climate over the next hundred years, can be accessed here along with other climate change related research and publications.
O UK Environmental Change Network
The Environmental Change Network (ECN) is the UK's long-term environmental monitoring programme. It is designed to collect, store, analyse and interpret long-term data based on a set of key physical, chemical and biological variables which drive and respond to environmental change at a range of terrestrial and freshwater sites across the UK. The site contains information on climate change indicators which can be used to monitor how the climate of the United Kingdom is changing.
