Defra
and Devolved Administrations announce cross-regional
research programme to boost understanding of climate
change
On 30 September 2004, Defra and the devolved
administrations announced details of a new £400,000
programme of research into the impacts of climate change on
some key UK sectors.
Six research projects are being supported over the next
two years under the "Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation:
Cross Regional Research Programme".
Four projects cover specific interests:
- planning, land use and the built environment
- business
- water resources
- countryside and the rural economy
These will investigate the impacts of climate change on
particular aspects of these sectors, and will also consider
potential adaptation responses. They will use local or
regional case studies during the course of their
research.
The other two are methodological in nature and will look
at quantifying the costs of climate change impacts and at
reviewing adaptation options and strategies.

Requirements for
Flood Mapping: Scoping Study
Published on 23 April 2004, this research identifies
the mechanisms and methods available to provide improved
flood risk maps for Scotland. The report, which was
commissioned in response to recent flood events, public
desire for information and the need to support planners in
determining areas at an unacceptable risk of flooding, will
assist SEPA in producing second generation indicative flood
risk maps, which will be made available on the Internet.

Climate
Change: Review of Levels of Protection Offered By
Flood Prevention Schemes UKCIP02 update
(2003)
Published on the 6 February 2004, this Executive
commissioned research updates an earlier review of the
implications climate change is projected to have on the
levels of protection offered by Scottish river and coastal
flood prevention schemes. The earlier research, which was
published in May 2001, was based upon the UK Climate
Impacts Programme's (UKCIP) 1998 climate change scenarios,
while the latest research updates this using UKCIP's 2002
scenarios to draw its conclusions. Paper copies of the full
research report can be purchased at a cost of £5 by sending
a cheque made payable to The Stationery Office to; The
