Climate Change

cloudEmissions of greenhouse gases and the use and disposal of certain chemicals are having a detrimental impact upon the global atmosphere.

Emissions from human activity of a basket of six greenhouse gases are required to be reduced under the Kyoto Protocol because it is widely acknowledged that they are contributing to changes in the global climate. Carbon dioxide is the most important of the gases in terms of its contribution to climate change.

Chlorofluorocarbons ( CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons ( HCFCs) are also powerful greenhouse gases. They damage the stratospheric ozone layer and are already being phased out under the Montreal Protocol.

Climate change and ozone depletion are not the same issue. The processes and impacts involved with each are different.
