New Marine Responsibilities

The Scottish Marine Bill currently being considered by the Scottish parliament, focuses on the need to promote a sustainable approach to marine management.

A joined up approach between forthcoming Scottish and UK legislation is also important to provide an effective framework for marine management. Scottish and UK Governments have agreed a way forward through the Joint Ministerial Committee.

Through the agreement Scotland will receive executive responsibility for planning and nature conservation out to 200 nautical miles. This is provided for in the UK Marine and Coastal Access Bill. The agreement also includes:

  • The administrations working together to deliver joined-up marine management where possible
  • Signing of a UK Marine Policy Statement to be part of an integrated marine management system
