REVIEW OF SCOTLAND'S COLLEGES
STEERING GROUP: COLLEGES' LONG TERM STRATEGIC FUTURE
REVISED PROPOSED TIMETABLE FOR SCENARIO PLANNING PROCESS

Purpose
1. To seek members views on a revised timetable for considering colleges' long term strategic future.
Background
2. When the Steering Group met in January to agree a timetable for the scenario planning process, we envisaged that the evidence gathering stage would be complete by the end of March 2006. Unfortunately there has been some slippage and this phase will not now end until the end of June.
Consideration
3. Given that the earlier agreed timetable in Steering Group paper 1 (attached for ease of reference) presupposed that the workshops would not be held until the evidence had been gathered, the Reviews Team, in consultation with the Chair of the Steering Group and Working Group, has concluded that it would not be productive to go ahead with the drivers workshop in May.
4. A proposed revised timetable is attached as an annex. It is not ideal because of the need to complete the process in January 2007. It suggests that the Steering Group meet in June to prepare for the drivers workshop. Although not all of the evidence will be available by then, we believe that there will be enough to allow the Steering Group to plan effectively on basis of the available information. The proposed timetable also proposes that Steering Group and Working Group meet over the summer months to put the work back on track.
Action
5. The Steering Group is invited to agree to the revised timetable.
