United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable

Learning for Change

Introduction

On 1 January 2005 the United Nations launched the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) to promote education as a basis for moving towards a sustainable society and to integrate sustainable development into education at all levels and all areas of life including communities, the workplace and society in general. In response, the then Scottish Executive set out Scotland's ambitions for ESD in the Learning for our Future action plan, published in 2006 Learning for our Future. The action plan specified key actions across education and learning in Scotland.

There have been many changes and achievements since the launch of the UN Decade. Now, at this halfway point of the Decade, we have updated this action plan, considering what progress has been made in ESD, and how best we can build on the momentum so far.

A summary of Scotland's new action plan for ESD, Learning for Change, can be accessed at www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2010/05/20152453. On these web pages, we provide further detail on the achievements within the universities and colleges sectors, and specify the actions we will take going forward into the second half of the Decade.
