Personal support
When pupils are happy, safe and supported, they are more likely to do well in school. Guidance, or personal support for pupils as it is now called, is an important focus in Scotland's schools. It aims to meet the care and welfare needs of all children and young people, so that they can achieve their fullest potential. For more information on the important role that teachers play in pupil support, you can go to the Parentzone website.
There was a National Review of Guidance in 2004, leading to the report Happy, Safe and Achieving Their Potential. It outlines the importance of personal support to pupils and
describes the common principles for the development of personal support
sets out a standard of support for pupils and parents
clarifies the roles of school staff and local authorities
recognises the role of partner agencies in supporting pupils and assisting staff in schools
points to current practice in Scotland which describe different approaches that are emerging.
The review's recommendations are currently being implemented across Scotland, and you can find more information about this by visiting the Scottish Health Promoting Schools website.
